Dr Joachim Strupp Memorial Lecture Study Day

This special event has been put together to celebrate the life of Dr Joachim Strupp, founder and creative director of Art Pursuits Abroad. Following Joachim’s death in April 2017, a collection fund was set up in partnership with the Museo Correr Library in Venice, an institution keenly supported by Joachim, to which many of you made incredibly generous donations. This event will present the opportunity to learn a little more about the Museo Correr Library and the chance to see some of the beautiful books and manuscripts that have been restored, as well as those due for restoration, thanks to your donations.

Professor Peter Humfrey, our Art Historical Advisor, will also deliver a special Venetian-themed lecture, further details of which are included below. Hailing from the University of St Andrews, Peter himself has a personal connection with Joachim, having acted as his PhD supervisor during Joachim’s time there.

The afternoon will conclude with a drinks reception and light lunch, where we can remember Joachim together in good company.

This is a not-for-profit event, although a small ticket price is asked to ensure your attendance and to contribute in part to the set-up of this day. The cost of this event will be £35.00 per person and bookings can be made exclusively by calling our offices on (01280) 820521. Unfortunately places for this event will be limited and we do anticipate a high level of interest, so do book early to avoid disappointment.

Patrons, Piety and Self-Promotion: Donor Portraits in Venetian Renaissance Altarpieces

Religious paintings of the Renaissance period often include portraits of the men and women who commissioned them. Such donor portraits appear rather less frequently in altarpieces in Venice because of an official disapproval of conspicuous self-promotion by individuals. This lecture will look at a number of exceptions to this general rule, and at the circumstances under which donor portraits were tolerated. Examples will include works by many of Venice’s leading painters, from Antonio Vivarini and Giovanni Bellini in the 15th century, to Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese in the 16th.
