Study Tour Overview

"It is now infinitely beautiful here. I was very moved last night as we strolled through the lakes, canals and woods by how the gods have allowed the Prince to create a dream around himself…."

Thus wrote Goethe in 1778. Twenty years earlier, the Prince, the 18-year-old Franz of Anhalt-Dessau, and his friend and adviser Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff had embarked on their first educational tour to England, followed by a Grand Tour to France, Italy and again England, journeys which were to prove inspirational: on his return home, the Prince started to make changes to his estates at Wörlitz, which became the first landscape gardens in continental Europe. The new Schloss is one of the earliest Neoclassical buildings in Germany, while the neo-Gothic House heralded the beginning of this Revivalist style in architecture. Over forty years, several other new landscape gardens such as the Georgium and the Luisium emerged in and around Dessau, while existing gardens like Oranienbaum and Mosigkau were integrated in an ingenious master plan, so that the countryside was eventually turned into an architectural encyclopaedia from classical Antiquity to the modern age. Avenues, canals and vistas — often enhanced with pavilions and statues — served to connect the individual gardens, resulting in an ensemble of cohesive garden landscapes unrivalled in Europe.

Excursions through this garden kingdom will be complemented by visits to the palaces and gardens of Sanssouci at Potsdam and an excursion to the Bauhaus School of Design in Dessau.

The programme details for this Art History Cultural Study Tour are as follows:

Day 1

Morning flight at c. 9am with BA to Berlin. By coach to Potsdam for refreshments and an initial visit to Sanssouci, created for Frederick the Great next to his stern father’s austere garrison town. In 1744 the king ordered a vineyard to be planted on six terraces on the southern slope of a barren hill and named it Sanssouci. The name reflects his desire for intimacy and simplicity, and the house translates the theme of a rustic villa into a Rococo-style palace of marble, mirrors and gold. From there continue to Dessau and your four-star hotel, our base for this tour.

Day 2

Spend the day on foot and by boat in the grounds of Wörlitz. The Schloss was built emulating English country houses; its perfectly preserved interiors include Antique sculptures, Italian and Dutch paintings, English pottery, stucco work and bespoke furniture made by Abraham and David Roentgen. In the grounds, the Gothic House, inspired by Horace Walpole’s Strawberry Hill, served as a retreat for Prince Franz. It has remarkable neo-Gothic furnishings, paintings by Lucas Cranach, and a collection of stained glass. The Rock Island with its grottoes and caves, an artificial volcano and the Villa Hamilton recall Prince Franz’s memories of Naples and his friendship with Sir William Hamilton.

Day 3

The Luisium is the Neoclassical country seat of Louise, wife of Prince Franz of Anhalt-Dessau. Today it appears as the most idyllic of all the grounds laid out between Dessau and Wörlitz. The intimate rooms and cabinets of the delightful house with their fine stucco decorations and Pompeian wall paintings have largely retained their original furnishings. The Georgium, on the other hand, was created by Franz’s younger brother, Prince Johann Georg. The English-style gardens are dotted with pavilions such as the ‘Fremdenhaus’, a Roman ruin, a Monopteros, two copies of Antique archways and a statue of Prince Franz in classical attire.

Day 4

Oranienbaum was created for the Dutch Countess Henriette Catharina of Orange-Nassau (1637-1708). Her architect, Cornelis Ryckwaert, also of Dutch origin, began work on a palace in 1683, thus kicking off a project which involved the Baroque layout of the town and the creation of the Dutch-inspired palace gardens. Under Prince Franz alterations were made, such as the building of one of Europe’s longest orangeries and an Anglo-Chinois garden with pagoda, tea house and arched bridges. The Rococo palace of Mosigkau was built by Princess Anna Wilhelmine of Anhalt-Dessau as a summer residence. In keeping with her last wishes, after her death in 1780 the house was converted into an institution for noble unmarried women, which existed until 1945. The house — known as ‘little Sanssouci’ — is one of the last surviving Rococo ensembles in Central Germany.

Day 5

Dessau-Rosslau and the Bauhaus School of Art and Design take us from the Age of Enlightenment to the dawn of Modernism. The Bauhaus was built in the mid 1920s to plans by Walter Gropius as the headquarters for his famous school of art, design and architecture. We will visit the school building and master houses in which the famous Bauhaus teachers once lived. Lunch at the Kornhaus, a distinctive restaurant designed by Bauhaus architect Carl Fieger, followed by a free afternoon.

Day 6

Return to Potsdam, Frederick’s ‘Prussian Versailles’. Its ensemble of palaces and parks is an exceptional artistic synthesis of trends in European 18th-century art, from Italy, England, Flanders, Paris and Dresden. Potsdam’s eclectic and evolutionary features reinforce its uniqueness: from Knobelsdorff to Schinkel and from Eyserbeck to Lenné, a series of architectural masterpieces and landscapes built within a single space, illustrating opposing and apparently irreconcilable styles without detracting from the harmony of the whole. In the afternoon continue to Berlin Tegel for an early evening flight to London Heathrow, scheduled to land at c. 6pm.

Please note that at this stage the programme is still provisional. Although we aim at the greatest degree of accuracy from the outset, some details, especially the order of visits, may be subject to change.

This tour involves a lot of walking on cobbled streets and on uneven, though mostly level ground. Garden and museum visits require prolonged periods of standing without the possibility of a rest. Please note that all our Study Tours involve a significant amount of standing and walking, often across uneven ground, over cobbled streets, or up and down steps and inclines. While we do not have an upper age limit for participants, we require you to have a level of fitness which does not spoil other participents' enjoyment of the holiday and you should be able to walk at a reasonable pace and / or stand for at least thirty minutes without aid or requiring a rest.

If you are in any doubt as to whether a particular tour is suitable for you, please ring us to check before placing your booking.
